India delivered a historic performance to defeat New Zealand by 96 runs and win the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on 8 March 2026. The victory helped India successfully defend their title and become the first team in history to win three T20 World Cups.

India’s Batting Dominance

After losing the toss, India were sent in to bat first. The Indian top order immediately put pressure on the New Zealand bowlers with aggressive stroke play during the powerplay.

  • Sanju Samson played a brilliant innings of 89 runs off 46 balls, smashing boundaries and sixes all around the ground.
  • Abhishek Sharma provided a rapid start with 52 runs off just 21 balls, reaching one of the fastest fifties of the tournament.
  • Ishan Kishan added another quick 54 runs from 25 balls, helping India cross the 250 mark.

India finished with 255 runs for 5 wickets, which became the highest total ever recorded in a T20 World Cup final.

New Zealand’s Chase

Facing a massive target of 256, New Zealand needed a strong start but quickly fell behind the required run rate.

Indian bowlers maintained tight control throughout the innings.

  • Jasprit Bumrah delivered a match-winning spell, taking 4 wickets for just 15 runs and was named Player of the Match.
  • Axar Patel also played a key role with 3 wickets for 27 runs.

Despite a fighting 52 from Tim Seifert, New Zealand struggled against India’s disciplined bowling and were eventually bowled out for 159 runs in 19 overs.

Historic Achievement for India

This victory was significant for several reasons:
