The 2025 Bihar Assembly Election, held in two phases on November 6 and November 11, culminated in a decisive victory for the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). Vote counting on November 14 confirmed the NDA’s overwhelming majority, signaling a major political win for the coalition.

Historic NDA Victory

The NDA won a commanding number of seats, crossing the 200-mark in the 243-member assembly. The BJP, for the first time in a Bihar assembly election, became the single largest party, while JD(U), led by Nitish Kumar, also saw a strong rebound. Nitish Kumar is poised to take the oath as Chief Minister again, marking his tenth term.

Voter Turnout Hits Record High

Voter turnout crossed 67%, the highest in Bihar's assembly election history since 1951. Notably, women’s turnout (71.78%) outpaced that of men (62.98%), underscoring rising political engagement among female voters.

Opposition Struggles

The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), led by Tejashwi Yadav, significantly underperformed. Despite his bold promises — like doubling panchayat allowance and granting interest-free funds to marginalized communities — Yadav’s pitch failed to translate into enough seats. The Congress and left-wing partners also struggled to make a meaningful impact.

Political Stakes and Implications

For Nitish Kumar, the victory cements his long-standing dominance in Bihar politics. For Prime Minister Modi and the BJP, it's a strategic win — reinforcing their influence in a crucial state with deep socio-economic challenges. Analysts suggest that the results could have broader implications for national politics.

On the flip side, the loss is a setback for Tejashwi Yadav and the RJD, raising questions about the effectiveness of their campaign and alliance strategy.
